Montenegro's mountains
Durmitor National Park, Montenegro
Glacial lakes, pine forest, a canyon so deep it's one of the biggest in Europe, and a mountain town that feels a world away from the Montenegrin coast. Durmitor is where you go to swap beach clubs for hiking boots for a few days.
The itinerary
Day 1: Bobotov Kuk
The big hike. Bobotov Kuk is the highest peak in the park, and the views from the top are worth every step. Start early, check the weather, and take plenty of water. It's a full day on the mountain, so plan nothing for the evening except dinner.
Day 2: Black Lake
An easier day. Walk the loop around Black Lake (Crno jezero) just outside Žabljak, swim if you're brave, and have lunch by the water. A perfect recovery day after the summit.
Day 3: Tara Canyon
Head to the Đurđevića Tara Bridge for the views and the zipline across the canyon, or book a rafting trip down the Tara River for the adventure version.
Optional: Day 4
Add a slower day for a scenic drive around the park or the smaller lakes, or move on towards the coast.

What to eat
Mountain food is hearty: try kačamak (a rich cornmeal dish), local cheese, lamb and fresh trout. Žabljak has a good handful of restaurants within walking distance of the centre.
Good to know
- Hire a car. Public transport is limited and the best spots are spread out.
- There's a small entry fee for the national park, so carry some euros.
- Weather changes fast in the mountains. Check before the summit and bring a waterproof.
- Book rafting and the zipline ahead in July and August.
- Žabljak gets cold at night, even in summer.
