Theth, Albania

A tiny village at the end of a mountain road in northern Albania, surrounded by the peaks of the Accursed Mountains. No big hotels, no rush, just guesthouses, waterfalls and some of the best hiking in the Balkans. This is the kind of place you slow right down in.

The itinerary

Day 1: Arrive and settle in

Make your way up from Shkodër (minibuses leave in the morning, or drive if you're comfortable with mountain roads). Check in, eat whatever your guesthouse is cooking, and walk the village: the little stone church against the mountains is the photo everyone comes for, and the Lock-in Tower tells the story of the region's old blood-feud traditions.

Day 2: The Blue Eye

The classic Theth day. Walk out to the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër), a glacier-blue pool at the end of a riverside trail. Allow most of the day, take water and snacks, and go early if you want it quiet. Brave the cold water if you can.

Day 3: Grunas Waterfall and a slow afternoon

A shorter walk from the village to Grunas Waterfall and the canyon nearby. Leave the afternoon free: read, work if you need to, and have dinner on the guesthouse terrace.

Optional: Theth to Valbona

If you're a hiker, this is the big one. The trail over the Valbona Pass links the two valleys in a full day on foot, and many people pair it with the Lake Komani ferry for one of the best routes in Europe. Arrange luggage transfer through your guesthouse.

What to eat

Most guesthouses serve dinner and breakfast, and it's usually the best food you'll have: fresh bread, cheese, mountain honey, slow-cooked meat and garden vegetables. There are a handful of small cafés in the village for lunch.

Good to know

  • Bring cash in Albanian lek. Card payments and ATMs are limited up in the mountains.
  • Phone signal and wifi can be patchy, so download offline maps before you go.
  • Pack layers. Evenings are cold even in summer.
  • Guesthouses fill up in July and August, so book ahead.
  • Ask your host about transfers. They can usually arrange minibuses and luggage for you.
